New Cell EXPLORERS Athlone team!

This month we travelled to Athlone to set up a new Cell EXPLORERS team! The team has been established in collaboration with Professor Neil Rowan, director of the Bioscience Research Institute and will be coordinated by Dr. Alessia Stocca and Dr. Erin Jo Tiedeken. Following training the new team went on school visit to two 5th classes in Coosan National School. A momentous occasion took place this week in Galway.... no, not the royal visit..... the first ever Pint of Science Galway Festival! On the evenings of the 18th and 19th May leading scientists in their field came to an unorthodox venue for scienitific discussions - the pub! The Pint of Science fesitval (www.pintofscience.com) is an international festival that takes place in several countries across the world on the same night and has the aim of bringing researches and the public together to allow them to have a chat in a relaxed atmosphere. Its been a busy month!

April was a busy time here at Cell EXPLORERS HQ! We were part of the Bio-EXPLORERS Easter Camp 2015 which ran from the 7th-10th April. At the camp young scientists learned about Our Bodies, Cells, How cells get their energy and DNA by performing experiments and activities with us. They also learned all about bugs, both big and small, and ecology, with Dr. Michel Dugon of Eco-EXPLORERS! We also took part in the Teen Tech event, the first one in Ireland, which ran in NUI Galway on the 17th April. 1st year students from secondary schools around Galway had the chance to complete a 10 minute challenge with us - extract some DNA!
